This painting is a reflection of self, I tried to evoke a feeling of personal contemplation. Sometimes the momments just before the action are more telling then the action itself.

I do have a website, at this time I am arranging gallery exibition so the work is fresh and really unseen to this point. www.joeltdugan.com

WOW! Great work! I really like the deliberate distortions in the anatomy and the line quality is great. Nice combinations of cross contour with haphazard mark making. You do some really nice things very similar to a well known Bay Area artist named David Tomb (http://www.davidtomb.com/)

Good luck with your upcoming shows!

I'm fond of the variation as well. I like how the birds/crows look as if they are part of the figure, the ambiguity there. The contrast in value works well too.

In terms of some critical feedback, two things come to mind. The first is conceptual, not as a point of something being wrong, but I thought I'd communicate that I don't interpret the piece in a specific manner. My first reaction made me wonder about Katrina or a natural disaster. My second one evokes a sense of loss or emotional hardship and sense of loneliness.

Secondly, the topic of visual clarity/discernment comes to mind. Again, this perhaps isn't criticism, but the sharing of my experience with the piece as a measure to whether another person's take is what you would expect (and I'm dense at times :> ). The content in the right hand column is somewhat unclear to me, which is part of what I like about the drawing. It's not straight forward.

It reminds me of Cecily Brown in some passages as her paintings invite the viewer to really take a long time to kind of see fragments of body parts and appreciate the work.

In any event, thanks for the submission Joel. Hope to see more in the future.
