art news
I stumbled upon the work of Chris Wayan online. What's neat about this work is it helps us visualize the threats of Global Warming we face. It's one thing to read a chart, and another to see how the place where one lives might be underwater in the future.
Also, Art Crit is in need of some more artwork. Send some in if you can!

scrap paper
In the past I've posted "open threads." These will now bear the titled "scrap paper" and will be a thread which can be used to share anything related to art. Maybe you've stumbled upon an interesting site or just saw an exhibition and want to mention your thoughts on it.
These threads will also funcion as a way for me to make announcements or discuss news relevant to Art Crit.
Recently, I updated the site. So there are a few new features. A new way to browse the website will be to look at the labels in the side bar. You can now search by name or medium. This will be an easy way for one to look at all the work a given artist has submitted. The archives now operates slightly differently as well, it's pretty self-explanatory. And, as I'm sure you've seen, there is now an Art Crit Manifesto. Every site should have a manifesto!

Art Crit Manifesto
"Art Crit"
Ever try to get an e-mail account and your name is taken? So you then try your last name first? Then maybe type some random numbers after your name? Yeah, that's why this site is named "Art Crit."
The Host
Hi, my name's Dean. I'm the one who posts the work that people send in and comment on the work. While I do share some personal information on the site, my identity remains anonymous to an extent, so if you know me off-line please try to respect that.
The Intention
Art Crit was created as a forum for artists to share their work and get some feedback on it, have a discussion. Most artists have spent considerable time gazing, interpreting, being with art and have a lot of valuable feedback to give one another. Thus, their thoughts are welcome and appreciated. There is also a great value in the opinions of those who haven’t inhabited the typical art constructs, perhaps these folks can think "outside the box" and share what's on their minds. In any event, everyone is encouraged to take part at Art Crit, there’s no right way to participate.
Art Crit was also created as a way to keep my “art mind” going as I graduated from college. However, its direction is malleable. I am quite open to the idea of having discussions about art in general and would love it if people e-mailed me articles, reviews, and discussion topics they write regarding art to be published on the site.
How Art Crit Works
Directions for submissions are provided in the link directly below the one for this glorious manifesto (look in the upper right hand section of the site).
Each work displayed will remain as the first post for at least two days. The rate at which Art Crit is updated has varied over time and is contingent upon the amount of submissions I receive.
To view older works, scroll down to the “Labels” section and browse by medium or artist. You can also browse through the archives which is located in the sidebar.
Some Clarifications
Briefly, I’d like to touch on some misconceptions.
As the proprietor of the site, I do not identify as a critic of art in a formal sense. I am far from a professional critic of art (whatever that means) and I have no aspirations to wear black turtle necks, sip lattés and write for the New Yorker (although, there’s nothing wrong with lattés, don't let anyone tell you otherwise). This is all to say that there is no such thing as a good or bad "review." My critiques are meant to raise awareness about a certain piece, i.e. it’s aimed to be constructive.
Copyright Info
If work is submitted you are agreeing that it is allowed to be displayed. For copyright information you must contact the respective artist. Please don’t use any of the images without asking first.
Guest Posters
Guest posters will be considered to help foster discussion and touch on different topics related to art. If you are interested in being a regular guest poster please contact me at deanoist@gmail.com. While there are no requirements for being a guest poster, candidates should have relevant experiences with art and a positive attitude towards providing constructive criticism to whichever piece is submitted to Art Crit.

Submission Directions
If you would like a piece shown, send Dean a picture of a piece at artcrit (at) gmail (dot) com. The size of the image should be on the large side.
Include relevant information as follows:
John Doe
"Number 3"
Oil
24"x20"
2006
I should be able to literally copy this information and paste it when I publish your work. Please don't underestimate my laziness, I might suprise you and publish what you write verbatim.
Note: I try to publish most work that I receive, but please send in work that you would like to be discussed, i.e. it should be recent work, or work which you intend on pursuing further.

Tag!
Every now and then in the land of the blogs a little game of tag is played, and we've been "tagged" by wu ming over at Surf Putah. Once "tagged" in this round, there is the option of either posting 7 accomplishments in 2006 or listing 5 quirky things about oneself that others probably don't know.
I'll go with the facts or quirks people don't know about me, they're probably more interesting. Although, admittingly, it is difficult to gauge how much my audience knows.
1. As a teenager, I played forward on local soccer team and we won the state championship.
2. I'm terribly addicted to warm beverages. Tea, coffee, it doesn't stop---Freud would have a field day.
3. I meditate, although I'm bad at doing it regularly.
4. I was a Nietzsche reading atheist for years but recently have been quite interested in mysticism/consciousness/presence (which may not be inconsistent with Nietzsche at all, but that's another topic).
5. I have a journal, and streamers on my tricycle.
Okay so, who to tag? Hmmm.. . .
I'll tag Man Eegee over at Man Eegee - Latino Politico
Olivia at Parvum Opus
Nonpartisan at Progressive Historians
Joe at Cup O' Joe
and dhonig at Left Toon Lane
You're it peoples!
